Is RS232 the same as UART?

RS232 and UART are not the same, but they have a certain relationship and are often used together. Here are the differences and connections between them:

UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter)

  • Definition: UART is a hardware device or module for asynchronous serial communication, responsible for sending and receiving serial data.
  • Function: Convert parallel data to serial data for transmission, and convert serial data back to parallel data at the receiving end.
  • Interface form: UART usually has pins such as TXD (transmit data), RXD (receive data), GND (ground).
  • Voltage standard: UART itself does not define the voltage level standard, and different level standards can be used, such as TTL, RS-232, etc.
  • Application: Widely used in short-distance communication between microcontrollers, computers and other devices.

RS-232

  • Definition: RS-232 is a serial communication standard that defines the voltage level, wiring and protocol of the signal.
  • Voltage standard:

High level (logic 0): usually between +3V and +15V.
Low level (logic 1): usually between -3V and -15V.

  • Interface form: Common RS-232 interfaces include connectors such as DB9 and DB25.
  • Application: Mainly used for long-distance communication between computers and peripheral devices (such as modems, printers).
  • Features: Suitable for long-distance communication and strong anti-interference ability.

Differences and connections

  • Different levels: UART is a hardware module used to handle the transmission of serial data; RS-232 is a communication standard that defines the electrical characteristics and physical connections of signals.
  • Different voltage levels: UART can use different level standards (such as TTL), while RS-232 has its own specific voltage standards.
  • Different uses: UART is often used for internal or short-distance communication in devices, while RS-232 is often used for long-distance communication between devices.

Comprehensive summary

  • UART is a hardware module for serial communication and can use multiple level standards.
  • RS-232 is a specific serial communication standard that defines specific voltage levels and interface forms.
  • Connection: In actual applications, UART modules can communicate through the RS-232 standard. This usually requires a level converter to convert the UART's TTL levels to RS-232's voltage levels in order to communicate with devices that use the RS-232 standard.

So, although UART and RS-232 are related in serial communication, they are not the same. UART is a hardware module, while RS-232 is a communication standard.
