Are TTL and RS-232 the same?

TTL and RS-232 are not the same, they have significant differences, mainly in voltage levels and application fields.

Voltage level:

High level (logic 1): usually 3.3V or 5V.
Low level (logic 0): usually 0V.

Application:

It is widely used in microcontrollers, development boards (such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi), sensors and other devices that require low voltage logic levels.

Communication distance:

Short-range communication, usually within a circuit board or between devices over short distances.

Voltage level:

High level (logic 0): usually between +3V and +15V.
Low level (logic 1): usually between -3V and -15V.

Application:

Mainly used for serial communication between computers and peripheral devices (such as modems, printers).

Communication distance:

Suitable for long-distance communication and can support distances of tens of meters or even longer.

Voltage range:

The high and low levels of TTL are 3.3V/5V and 0V respectively.
The high and low levels of RS-232 are positive voltage and negative voltage (+3V to +15V and -3V to -15V) respectively.

Application scenarios:

TTL is used for low-voltage, short-distance communication between electronic devices.
RS-232 is used for higher voltage, long-distance communication between devices, especially the connection between computers and peripherals.

Electrical characteristics:

TTL signals are relatively susceptible to interference and are suitable for short-distance communications.
RS-232 signal voltage is higher, anti-interference ability is strong, and it is suitable for long-distance communication.

So, although both are used for serial communications, they are not the same due to differences in voltage levels and application scenarios.
