Is RS-232 a serial cable?

RS-232 itself is not a cable, but a serial communication standard. However, the RS-232 standard is often associated with specific types of serial cables that are used to transfer data between devices that follow the RS-232 standard.

RS-232 Standard:

• Definition: RS-232 (Recommended Standard 232) is a serial communication standard developed by the Electronic Industries Association (EIA) for data transmission between computers and external devices (such as modems, printers).
• Electrical characteristics: Defines the voltage level of the signal, with logic 1 and logic 0 being negative and positive voltages respectively.

RS-232 Cable:

• Purpose: RS-232 cables are used to connect devices that follow the RS-232 standard for serial data transmission.
• Appearance: Usually equipped with connectors such as DB9 or DB25, the cable has multiple wires inside, each wire is used to transmit a specific signal.
• Types:

Straight-through cable: used to connect DTE (data terminal equipment, such as computers) and DCE (data communication equipment, such as modems).
Null modem cable: used to directly connect two DTE devices to achieve communication by crossing the send and receive pins.

RS-232 is a communication standard, not a cable.
