How do I test my NMEA signal with a multimeter?

1. Preparation work

 

Before starting the measurement, first confirm whether to use an analog multimeter or a digital multimeter. 2. Wiring method

 

1). Ground wire: Connect the ground wire of the multimeter to the ground wire of the circuit under test. If the circuit under test does not have a clear ground wire, it can be grounded on the negative pole of the power supply.

 

2). Measurement point: Find the signal pin or component that needs to be measured, and connect the red test lead to that point. If you need to measure a point in the middle of the circuit, you need to dismantle the circuit and wire it.

 

3). Select the measurement range: Select the measurement range of the multimeter according to the voltage range of the signal being measured to ensure the accuracy of the measurement results. If the voltage of the circuit under test is about 5V, you can select the 20V range for measurement.

 

3. Read the test results

 

After adjusting the range of the multimeter to an appropriate range, the voltage value of the measured point can be read, and the strength of the signal can be judged according to the scale of the multimeter. If the multimeter reads zero, the circuit is faulty or the connections are wrong.

 

It should be noted that when measuring signals with a multimeter, you must ensure that the circuit under test is in working condition, otherwise the measurement results will be inaccurate.

 

In addition, there are some things to note when using a multimeter to measure signals:

 

1. The wiring between the ground wire and the measuring point should be kept as short and stable as possible to avoid measurement errors caused by poor contact and other reasons.

 

2. Before measuring, you need to learn how to distinguish the positive and negative poles.

 

3. When measuring signals with the multimeter, try to avoid touching other circuit components or the casing, otherwise it will affect the measurement results.

 

4. The clamp probe of a multimeter can be used to measure the DC magnetic field present in the circuit, but it is not suitable for measuring small signals.
