Why does the CAN bus have two 120Ω terminal resistors?
The ends of the CAN bus must be connected to the terminal resistance to work normally. The terminal resistance should be the same as the impedance of the communication cable. The typical value is 120 ohm. Its role is to match bus impedance to improve the anti -interference and reliable behavior of data communication.
The role of the terminal resistance is to absorb signal reflection and echo, and if the impedance is not continuous and the non -matched, the signal reflection will be generated, which will interfere with the transmitted signal.
If the terminal resistance is added to the two separate lines, it is equivalent to a state of opening. This connection method will cause a single line of impedance to be more discontinuous, and suddenly becomes 0 at the end, which will cause reflection to double.

The reason why low -speed CAN does not add terminal resistors is because the wavelength is relatively long, and the reflection and echo are weak. However, the control unit of the low-speed CAN system will have its own independent terminal resistance. It is not connected between the CAN-HIGH wire and the CAN-LOW wire, but between each wire or between the+5V power supply. If the battery is powered off, the resistance is gone, and the resistance cannot be measured at this time.
