Termination and Bias Resistors

A regular RS-485 network (eg MPI, DP) should use termination resistors and bias resistors. Termination and bias resistors can also be omitted for very short network cables, temporary or laboratory testing.

Bias resistor: Bias resistor is used to ensure the relative relationship between A and B signals when the electrical situation is complicated, and to ensure the reliability of "0" and "1" signals.

Siemens' PROFIBUS network connectors already have built-in termination and bias resistors that can be easily turned on or off with a switch. The terminal resistance switch of the plug of the network terminal must be placed in the "ON" position; the terminal resistance switch of the plug of the intermediate site should be placed in the "OFF" position.

The values of the termination and bias resistors are fully compliant with Siemens communication ports and PROFIBUS cables.

By closing the terminal resistance switch of the network plug in the network, it is very convenient to cut off the signal transmission of part of the network behind the plug.

When communicating with other devices (using PROFIBUS cable), the communication port of the other party may not be of the D-SUB9 pin type, or the pin definitions may be completely different. For example, Siemens MM4x0 inverter, RS-485 communication port adopts terminal wiring form. In this case, it is necessary to connect a terminal resistor. Siemens can provide a relatively regular external resistor. For other equipment, it can be made according to the technical data in the "S7-200 System Manual".

The size of the terminal resistance and bias resistance in the Siemens network plug matches the characteristic impedance of the Siemens PROFIBUS cable. It is strongly recommended that users use the Siemens PROFIBUS cable and network plug. A lot of trouble can be avoided.
