Terminating resistors are used to eliminate signal reflections in communication cables. During communication, there are two reasons for signal reflections: impedance discontinuity and impedance mismatch.

The impedance is discontinuous, and the signal suddenly encounters the cable at the end of the transmission line with little or no impedance, and the signal will cause reflections at this place. The principle of this kind of signal reflection is similar to the reflection of light from one medium into another medium. To eliminate this reflection, it is necessary to connect a terminal resistor with the same size as the characteristic impedance of the cable at the end of the cable, so that the impedance of the cable is continuous. Since the transmission of the signal on the cable is bidirectional, a terminating resistor of the same size can be connected across the other end of the communication cable.

Another cause of signal reflections is the impedance mismatch between the data transceiver and the transmission cable. The reflection caused by this reason is mainly manifested in the confusion of the entire network data when the communication line is in idle mode.

In order to improve the topology capability of the network nodes, both ends of the CAN bus need to be connected with a 120Ω reflection-suppressing terminal resistance, which plays a very important role in matching the bus impedance. If this resistance is ignored, the anti-interference and reliability of digital communication will be improved. Sex is greatly reduced, and even communication is impossible.
