Hmm, I don’t see now why you need round.
You want: Easy insertable.
Many insertions.
Usable for many applications.
A round plug would a system require connections in the other direction as the connector.
During the plugging in , or when it gets loose, there are many problems with this design. USB is now designed so that the ground is connected before all the signalling, i don’t see how that would work with a round system.
Actually, on that last part USB-C passed it usability. You can insert the plug easy, but it is almost impossible to determine if it will work. DOes the port support USB charging? Does the port support Display over USB? Is it USB 3? Usb 3.1 ? USB 4?
Maybe the next iteration should have a color system or logo system what a port supports.
