Is DeviceNet the same as NMEA 2000?

1, Protocol Basis and Standards
DeviceNet:
Foundation: DeviceNet is an open communication network based on CAN (Controller Area Network) bus, designed specifically for industrial automation. It adopts the physical layer and data link layer protocols of CAN, and establishes its own application layer protocol based on them.
Standard: The specifications and protocols of DeviceNet are open and managed and maintained by the Open DeviceNet Vendor Association (ODVA). Its communication protocol follows the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP), providing a standardized solution for the interconnection and interoperability between industrial automation equipment.
NMEA 2000:
Foundation: NMEA 2000 is the latest version of the maritime industry standard developed by NMEA (National Marine Electronics Association) for the mutual communication between electronic and marine instruments. It is an extension based on the CAN 2.0B protocol, specifically optimized for ship electronic systems.
Standard: The NMEA 2000 standard was jointly developed by multiple companies and organizations within and outside the industry, aiming to improve the ease of installation, reduce costs, and enhance electronic hybrid capabilities of ship electronic systems. This standard is not only compatible with the CAN-BUS controller LAN communication protocol for automobiles and internal combustion engines, but also references the wiring specifications and connection design scheme of DeviceNet.
2, Application scenarios
DeviceNet:
Mainly used in the field of industrial automation, such as connecting sensors, actuators, controllers and other equipment on production lines to achieve data exchange and instruction transmission between devices. It is particularly suitable for device level industrial networks and can directly connect and control field devices.
NMEA 2000:
Focusing on the field of ship electronic systems, it is used to connect various electronic devices on ships, such as GPS, VHF, radar, Chartplotter, engines, outboard motors, and speed and depth sensors. The NMEA 2000 network sends messages and data in two directions through a single backbone cable, achieving integration and unified management of ship electronic systems.
3, Technical features
DeviceNet:
Short frame transmission: The maximum data per frame is 8 bytes, suitable for transmitting short control instructions and status information.
Non destructive bit by bit arbitration technology: ensuring that multiple devices do not experience data conflicts when sending data simultaneously.
Network topology structure: Supports trunk branch mode, with thick cables mostly used as trunk lines and thin cables mostly used as branch lines.
Low cost, high reliability: suitable for connecting bottom end industrial equipment, while supporting the connection of complex devices such as frequency converters and operation terminals.
NMEA 2000:
High speed data transmission: The data rate is 250k bits/second, far higher than the NMEA 0183 standard's 4.8k bits/second, and can handle large amounts of data.
Multi speaker system: supports simultaneous transmission and reception of signals, enabling a single backbone system to connect multiple devices from many different manufacturers.
Open Plug and Play System: Devices can mix and match devices from different manufacturers to build ship electronic systems, with easy installation and strong scalability.
Device Description File: Using a device description file to describe the properties and functions of the device, facilitating automatic identification and configuration of the device.
