It is commonly used for local area networks (LANs) and provides a significant improvement over the previous Fast Ethernet standard, which had a maximum speed of 100 megabits per second (Mbps).

100 Megabits per second (Mbps): As mentioned earlier, Fast Ethernet operates at a speed of 100 Mbps. It is roughly ten times slower than 1GbE, meaning that 1GbE can transfer data ten times faster than Fast Ethernet.
10 Megabits per second (Mbps): Before Fast Ethernet, the most common network standard was 10 Mbps Ethernet. 1GbE is a hundred times faster than this older technology.
Wi-Fi Standards: Comparing 1GbE to wireless standards, the most common Wi-Fi technology used in households is 802.11ac, which can offer theoretical speeds of up to 1.3 Gbps. However, it's important to note that real-world Wi-Fi speeds can be significantly lower due to various factors such as distance, interference, and network congestion.
