Does AIS need its own antenna?

Yes, AIS (Automatic Identification System) does need its own antenna. AIS utilizes VHF radio frequencies to communicate ship data such as position, speed, and course to other vessels and shore stations. These frequencies require line-of-sight communication, meaning that the AIS antenna needs to be mounted on a high point on the vessel for optimal transmission and reception.

Having a separate AIS antenna allows for clear and reliable communication. It also reduces interference from other onboard electronics, which can impact the accuracy of the AIS data being transmitted. By using a dedicated AIS antenna, vessel operators can ensure that their AIS system is working effectively and enhancing safety at sea.

In summary, while it is possible to share an antenna between AIS and other VHF communication systems, having a dedicated AIS antenna is highly recommended for optimal performance and safety.
