Does AIS need Internet?

The simple answer is no, AIS does not require an internet connection to function. AIS works through a VHF radio frequency and uses a network of terrestrial and satellite-based receivers to track vessel movement. These receivers then relay the vessel position, speed, and other information to other vessels in the area as well as shore-based stations.

While AIS can be used with an internet connection to provide additional information such as weather updates and port information, it is not necessary for the basic functionality of AIS. Even in areas with limited or no internet connectivity, AIS can still be used for tracking and communication between vessels.

Furthermore, AIS technology continues to evolve, with new advancements such as AIS satellite technology enabling coverage in even the most remote regions of the world. This means that the benefits of AIS can be realized even in areas without internet connectivity.
