CABLE ASSEMBLY VS. WIRE HARNESS

Cable Assembly vs. Wire Harness

Cable assemblies and wiring harnesses are often confused as the same product. The confusion is understandable because many professionals use these terms interchangeably, and the products themselves have very similar basic functions, yet these products exist within each other. There is a big difference, so what is the difference between the cable assembly and the wiring harness?

Wire Harness

At its most basic, the wire harness is a simple outer sheath that covers some wires or cables. It is usually made of thermoplastic or thermoset material and helps protect the wire from the environment. In most cases, wire harnesses bundle cables and wires that are already protected by their outer jacket. This means you can open the harness and see multiple strands with their own coverings, but they're all in one harness.

Wiring harnesses are a low-cost electrical solution best suited for keeping electrical systems in order. By bundling wires and cables together, engineers and electrical contractors can keep their wiring systems organized. Because wire harnesses are often low-cost organizational tools, they often do not protect the interior of the wire from constant friction, temperature fluctuations, or other factors that can cause damage to the wires inside the harness.

Cable Assembly

A cable assembly is a group of wires or cables covered by a denser outer product. Typically, they are made of heavy-duty materials, including shrink-wrapped thermoplastics, thermoplastic rubber, or vinyl. These components serve similar functions to wire harnesses, including keeping wires and cables organized, but are designed for use in a completely different environment.

Cable assemblies are designed for specific environmental factors, including the size of the area in which they are used and the types of environmental factors that may be encountered. For this reason, cable assemblies can come in many different shapes and sizes and are constructed to shield internal wires and cables from heat, friction, moisture, abrasion, compression, and other hazards.

In fact, the main difference between wire harnesses and cable assemblies is that each is used in a different environment, wire harnesses provide a low-cost solution to keep wires organized, while cable assemblies guarantee all products in the most extreme cases security.
