What Does This Article Cover?
Large stage lighting, LED, theater, concert and architectural lighting systems may connect multiple fixtures and controllers on a DMX512 data link. As cable length and node count increase, impedance discontinuities at the end of the transmission line can contribute to signal reflections and degraded signal integrity.
This article explains the fundamentals, termination principle, connector structure, applications and selection considerations of an RJ45 120-ohm DMX512 terminator, using Premier Cable PCM-0189 as an example.
Quick Product Introduction
PCM-0189 uses an 8P8C RJ45 male connector with an integrated 120-ohm resistor between Pin 1 and Pin 2. When connected to the end of a DMX512 link using the corresponding RJ45 pin assignment, it provides termination for the differential data pair and helps minimize end-of-line reflections.

Compatibility Statement
This product is intended for compatible DMX equipment using an RJ45 interface where the required differential data pair corresponds to Pin 1 and Pin 2.
An RJ45/8P8C connector describes the physical interface but does not by itself guarantee electrical pinout compatibility. Pin assignments may vary between lighting controllers, splitters, nodes, fixtures and manufacturers.
Technical Compatibility Notice :
Before installation, verify the RJ45 pin assignment, differential data pair, required termination resistance and network topology specified by the equipment manufacturer. PCM-0189 places the 120Ω resistor between Pin 1 and Pin 2, so the target equipment must use the corresponding pins for the intended differential pair.
The terminator should normally be installed at the physical end of the applicable bus segment rather than at an arbitrary intermediate node.

Basic Product Knowledge
What Is DMX512 ?
DMX512 is a digital communication protocol widely used in professional stage and lighting control systems. Its physical signaling uses differential transmission, allowing controllers, lighting fixtures, dimmers and other compatible nodes to communicate over a shared link.
When a signal reaches the physical end of a transmission line, improper termination can cause part of the signal energy to reflect back along the cable. A correctly selected termination resistor helps control these reflections and preserve signal integrity.
Why 120 Ohms ?
The termination resistor is intended to provide an appropriate load at the end of the transmission line rather than simply adding resistance to the circuit.
A 120-ohm termination value is commonly associated with RS-485-type differential communication systems. PCM-0189 integrates this resistor directly into the RJ45 plug, eliminating the need for loose resistors, soldering or additional field wiring.

Applications:
-
DMX512 LED stage lighting system
- PAR and Oscillating Light Control System
- LED wall washer lights and effect lights
- Theater and Concert Lighting Control
- Architectural landscaping
- DMX Lighting Control Console
- Bar and nightclub lighting projects
- Conference Center and Exhibition Display
- Large event lighting system
Pain Points and Product Value
Challenge 1:
Signal Reflection on Long-Distance
As DMX wiring increases, transmission line effects become more significant. If the end of the wire is not properlyterminated, signals may reflect and superimpose onto the original waveform, increasing difficulty for the receiver to determine data.
PCM-0189 uses an internal 120n resistor for end matching on compatible dircuits, thereby helping reduce reflections
Challenge 2:
The communication is unstable after multiple luminaires are connected
Stage and landscape lighting projects typically require connecting multiple devices on a single DMX chain.Increased nodes, complex wiring, increased connectors, and cable quality differences can all affect signal integrity across the entire chain.
Correct terminators cannot solve all wiring problems, but they are an important part of standardizing DMX bus design.
Challenge 3:
Inconvenient on-site installation of terminal resistors
Using bare resistors for on-site welding not only increases construction time but also easily leads topin position errors, insufficient solder joint reliability, and lack of mechanical protection issues.
The PCM-0189 adopts an RJ45 plug + integrated 120 ohm resistor design; inserting it at the end port of compatible devices completes terminal configuration, making it more suitable for engineering installation and system maintenanc

Structural Design:
1. RJ45 8P8C Male Connector
Standard 8P8C RJ45 plug structure provides compact and fast insertion/removalconnection method suitable for devices using corresponding RJ45 DMX interface.
2. Gold-plated Connection PIN Pin
The contacts are gold-plated, which helps improve contact stability and reduce the impact of oxidation and pollution on connection performance during long-term use.
3. 120 Terminal Matching Resistor
The 1200 resistor is integrated inside the connector and connected between Pin1 and Pin2, providing end matching for the corresponding DMX differential signal pair.
4. Plastic protective structures
Protects internal resistors and electrical connections through molded housing, reducing the risk of mechanical damage during repeated on-site installation, transportation, and maintenance.

How to choose ?
When purchasing RJ45 DMX Terminator, it is recommended toconfirm the following 5 items:
- Confirm device interface
The device must have the corresponding RJ45/8P8C interface.
- Confirm the Pin Assignment
This is one of the most important compatibilty conditions. The 120 ohm resistor on PCM-0189 connects between Pin 1 and Pin 2. ww
- Confirm terminal resistance
The target device or system should be required to use the corresponding 120 terminal solution; do not select based solely on interface
appearance.
- Confirm installation location
The terminal shall be installed at the end of the corresponding bus segment in accordance with the system
topology requirements.
- Confirm Application Protocol
Do not assume that because the product uses an RJ45 interface, it belongs to Ethernet. You should confirm whetherthe target device actually uses DMX512, RS-485 differential communication, or other dedicated interfaces

Frequently Asked Questions
01. Why does the RJ45 DMX terminator use 1200 resistor ?
120 ohms is a commonly used termination value for RS-485-type differentialtransmission. Its purpose is to provide appropriate end-of-line termination andreduce signal reflections. Always verify the termination requirements of thetarget equipment.
02.Can all RJ45 DMX devices use PCM-0189 ?
No. The same RJ45 connector shape does not guarantee the same electrical pinout. Check the equipment manual and verify the Pin 1/Pin 2 assignment and termination requirements before use.
03.Can a 120Ω terminator solve all DMX strobe light issues ?
No. Termination primarily addresses transmission-line reflections. DMX problems may also result from incorrect pinouts, unsuitable cabling, poor connections, topology, EMI, grounding issues or equipment faults.
04.Is it possible to customize other resistance values or pin definitions ?
Yes. Custom RJ45 termination connectors can be developed with different resistance values, pin assignments and mechanical configurations for OEM lighting, industrial control and specialized RS-485 applications.
