What type of cable does PROFINET use?

4-wire shielded green cable: This is the most common PROFINET copper cable that supports 100 Mbps fast Ethernet transmission over a distance of 100 meters. This type of cable usually adopts a star twisted structure to reduce electromagnetic interference and signal attenuation. Its green sheath is not only easy to identify, but also complies with the reinforcement specifications standardized by PROFIBUS and PROFINET International (PI).
8-core copper cable: For applications that require higher transmission rates, such as 1 Gbps, 8-core copper cable can be used. This type of cable has superior physical structure and transmission performance, and can meet the needs of high-speed data transmission.

Fiber category: When using PROFINET fiber, four different fiber categories can be used: POF (plastic fiber), multimode glass fiber, single-mode glass fiber, and HCF (hard coated fiber) or PCF (photonic crystal fiber) with plastic jacket.
3, Selection and Application of PROFINET Cable

Transmission distance and speed: The transmission distance of a single copper section is limited to 100 meters. If longer distances need to be covered, a node, such as a switch, must be installed every 100 meters. Fiber optic cables, on the other hand, cover longer distances by default.
Electromagnetic interference: Copper cables are susceptible to electromagnetic interference, so caution must be taken when approaching power and data cables. Fiber optic cables are immune to electromagnetic interference.
Environmental conditions: Depending on the installation environment, fixed, flexible, or dynamically installed cable types can be selected. For example, in vibration or torsion applications, R-type or C-type copper cables or C-type fiber optic cables should be selected.
Cost: The cost of cables varies depending on the type and function. In addition to the cost per meter of cable, the cost of testing equipment, connectors, and adapters also needs to be considered. In addition, different cables may require installation training.
