Do you need all 8 wires for gigabit Ethernet?

Yes, Gigabit Ethernet requires 8 wires to work properly. Gigabit Ethernet standards (such as 1000BASE-T) require that each of the four twisted pairs be used to send and receive data at the same time to achieve a transmission speed of 1 Gbps. Therefore, unlike Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet cannot rely on only 4 wires to transmit data, and must use a full 8 wires to achieve full-duplex high-speed transmission.
