It is not recommended to use NMEA 0183 cables in NMEA 2000 systems. This is because NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 are two completely different communication protocols, which have very different data transmission, connectors, topologies, and electrical specifications.
The specific reasons are as follows:
- Different electrical standards: NMEA 2000 uses the CAN bus protocol, operates at 12V voltage, and supports multi-node network connections. NMEA 0183 is a serial communication-based protocol that operates at a lower voltage (usually 5V or RS-422 signal) and only supports point-to-point connections.
- Different physical interfaces: NMEA 2000 cables have 5 conductors (2 for power, 2 for data, and 1 for shielding), while NMEA 0183 usually has only 3 or 4 conductors and cannot fully support the power supply and data transmission needs of NMEA 2000.
- Bandwidth and data rate differences: NMEA 2000 provides a higher data rate (250kbps), capable of transmitting large amounts of data simultaneously, and is suitable for multiple devices to share information. NMEA 0183, on the other hand, has a lower data transmission rate (usually 4800bps or higher) and only supports simple data transmission.
Therefore, NMEA 0183 cables cannot meet the needs of NMEA 2000 systems, and using inappropriate cables may cause data transmission problems, system instability, and even damage to the device. It is recommended that you replace the cable with one suitable for NMEA 2000 to ensure the normal operation of the system.
