What are the different types of encoder cable connectors?

1、 Differences in connectors between single turn and multi turn encoders
Encoders can be divided into two types based on the characteristics of their output signals: single turn and multi turn. A single turn encoder outputs a pulse signal, while a multi turn encoder outputs other information such as direction, speed, etc. on top of the basic pulse signal. The selection of cable connectors varies for these two types of encoders.
Single turn encoder connector: Single turn encoders usually only need to connect a pair of signal wires and a pair of power wires. Therefore, common connector types include M8, M12, etc. These connectors are compact and lightweight, suitable for environments with limited space.
Multi turn encoder connector: Due to the need for multi turn encoders to transmit more information, their connectors typically have more pins to support additional signal lines. D-type connectors (such as DB9 and DB15) are common choices, providing sufficient pin count to meet the connection requirements of multi turn encoders.

Another factor that affects the selection of cable connectors is the working principle of encoders, namely absolute value encoders and incremental encoders. They have significant differences in signal output and connector selection.
Absolute value encoder connector: The absolute value encoder can provide accurate position information and maintain position information even after power outage. Due to its multiple channel outputs, connectors are often more complex. Multi pin D-type connectors and circular connectors (such as M23) are common choices to cope with complex signal transmission requirements.
Incremental encoder connector: The incremental encoder outputs pulse signals, and its connector is relatively simple. Common options include connectors such as M8 and M12, which are simple and economical and suitable for applications where accuracy requirements are not particularly high.
3、 The influence of environmental factors on connector selection
Different application scenarios and working environments also have a certain impact on the selection of cable connectors. The following are some common environmental factors and corresponding connector selection suggestions:
Corrosion resistance: In humid or corrosive environments, stainless steel connectors are a good choice as they have excellent corrosion resistance and are suitable for harsh working conditions.
Waterproof and dustproof: For scenarios that require waterproof and dustproof performance, circular connectors (such as M23 and M30) usually have good sealing performance to ensure reliable operation of equipment in harsh environments.
High or low temperature environment: Under extreme temperature conditions, the material and design of the connector must be able to adapt to these conditions. The type of connector that can withstand high or low temperatures should be selected based on the specific working environment.
