What Is This Article About ?

As ADAS, autonomous driving, multi-camera vision systems, radar, navigation, and automotive communication systems continue to expand, automotive electronic equipment must accommodate more high-speed RF channels within limited installation space. At the same time, vehicle chassis areas, exterior camera locations, and other environments exposed to moisture or dust place higher requirements on connector sealing performance.

A Waterproof Quad HFM Mini FAKRA RF Coaxial Cable uses one waterproof four-channel HFM Mini FAKRA interface to centralize four independent 50-ohm coaxial links, while four separate waterproof FAKRA Z Code interfaces provide breakout connections. This arrangement combines high-density connectivity, multi-channel routing, RF transmission, and environmental protection.

Using PCM-ZC-0036 as an example, this article explains what this waterproof four-in-one automotive RF coaxial cable assembly is, how it works, why it is used, what 50-ohm impedance and 6GHz operation mean, how IP67 should be interpreted in real engineering applications, and how to select and customize the cable correctly for ADAS, camera, radar, and high-speed data systems.

Product Comparison

What Is the Difference Between Waterproof Quad HFM and Four Separate FAKRA Cables ?

Comparison Four independent FAKRA harnesses Waterproof Quad HFM to 4 FAKRA
Controller End Interface 4 independent interfaces 1 four channel HFM interface
Device End Space Need to install 4 interfaces separately Four channels centralized at one HFM interface
Installation operations Need to connect multiple ports separately HFM end can be centrally connected
Waterproof Design Depends on specific connector version This product uses IP67 waterproof interface

The most important difference is not whether four signals are available, because both solutions can maintain four independent coaxial channels. The primary difference is the connection density on the controller side.

Quad HFM integrates four coaxial interfaces into one compact connector structure, reducing the number of separate equipment-side connectors. Rosenberger positions HFM as a high-density automotive Mini-Coax system and states that it can provide significant space savings compared with conventional FAKRA, making it suitable for ADAS, autonomous driving, and multi-sensor systems.

What Is a Waterproof Quad HFM Mini FAKRA RF Coaxial Cable ?

A Waterproof Quad HFM Mini FAKRA RF coaxial cable is an automotive multi-channel passive RF interconnection cable assembly.

One end of PCM-ZC-0036 uses a Rosenberger AMK14K-1M4Z5-Z waterproof Quad HFM Mini FAKRA Z Code female connector containing four independent coaxial signal paths. The opposite side breaks out into four Rosenberger 59Z163-003-Z waterproof FAKRA Z Code female connectors.

Four LEONI Dacar 302-4 automotive coaxial cables establish four independent 50-ohm transmission paths.

Electrically, therefore, the product is not a splitter that converts one signal into four signals. Its architecture is:

Four independent RF channels → integrated into one Quad HFM housing → mapped to four independent FAKRA interfaces.

The cable assembly contains no RF splitter, SerDes device, PHY, amplifier, deserializer, or protocol conversion chipset.

Why Is This Product Used ?

Traditional multi-camera or multi-sensor systems may require multiple independent FAKRA interfaces on a domain controller, ECU, or central computing platform.

As the number of channels increases, multiple separate interfaces consume more PCB-edge and housing space while increasing mating operations, cable organization, and port-management requirements.

Quad HFM centralizes four coaxial links through one high-density multi-channel interface, allowing a more compact equipment-side connector layout while retaining the FAKRA ecosystem at the breakout side for connection to cameras, radar modules, navigation units, or other automotive electronics.

When the system is exposed to moisture, dust, exterior camera locations, or other harsh environments, waterproof HFM and FAKRA connector variants can further improve environmental protection around the interface.

Selection Guide

How to Select the Correct Product ?

1

Confirm Complete Connector Part Numbers First

Do not provide only a general description such as "Quad Mini FAKRA required" or "FAKRA Z Code required" to the cable manufacturer.

Provide the complete equipment-side connector part number and interface images and confirm the mating structure.

Standard PCM-ZC-0036 uses:

HFM side: AMK14K-1M4Z5-Z
FAKRA side: 4 × 59Z163-003-Z

If the equipment interfaces are different, connector matching must be reassessed.

2

Select Cable Length According to the Link Not Only Mechanical Distance

Standard lengths include:

0.5m, 1m, 2m, 3m, and 5m.

Mechanical distance is only one part of cable-length selection.

For high-speed video or data links, consider:

Mechanical Distance + Routing Margin + Cable Loss + SerDes Link Budget

Particularly for 3m and 5m lengths, identical high-speed performance to a 0.5m version should not be assumed without testing.

3

Confirm the Required Waterproof Condition

Customers should clearly define whether the IP67 requirement applies to:

  • Mated connector condition;
  • Complete cable assembly;
  • Connector interface area;
  • Exterior vehicle installation;
  • Temporary immersion;
  • Vehicle washing exposure;
  • Long-term humidity;
  • Salt-spray environment.

Different operating conditions require different validation tests.

4

Confirm Complete RF Link Requirements

Procurement or engineering teams should provide at least:

  • Frequency range;
  • Data rate;
  • Protocol;
  • SerDes model;
  • Target cable length;
  • Maximum insertion loss;
  • Return loss requirement;
  • VSWR requirement;
  • Power-over-coax requirement;
  • Temperature requirement;
  • Waterproof requirement.

This information allows the manufacturer to determine whether a standard cable can be used directly or whether alternative cable construction and additional validation are required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Product FAQ

Is This a One to Four RF Signal Splitter ?

No.

PCM-ZC-0036 contains four independent point-to-point coaxial channels.

The Quad HFM connector only integrates four interfaces into one connector housing. It does not automatically duplicate one signal into four signals.

If a project requires a true 1-to-4 RF splitter, an additional RF power-divider circuit is required. That is a different technical product category.

Does IP67 Mean the Connector Is Always Waterproof When Unmated ?

No.

Connector ingress protection normally needs to be confirmed under defined installation and test conditions.

Actual waterproof performance may differ if the connector is unmated, not fully locked, missing seals, or incorrectly terminated.

Therefore, the required IP67 acceptance condition should be clearly defined for exterior cameras or exposed installations.

Can a 5 Meter Cable Still Reliably Carry 6GHz Signals ?

This must be determined from finished-product testing and the system link budget.

A cable assembly designed for DC-to-6GHz operation is not the same as guaranteeing that every 5m link meets a fixed loss limit at 6GHz.

Longer cables generally introduce greater high-frequency attenuation.

For a 5m high-speed application, verify:

  • 6GHz insertion loss;
  • Return loss;
  • VSWR;
  • Receiver margin;
  • Actual camera-to-ECU communication performance.

Can the Four FAKRA Branches Have Different Lengths ?

Yes.

For example, in a multi-camera system where four cameras are installed at different locations, each breakout branch can be designed with a different length according to the equipment layout.

However, the mapping of every channel should be defined in advance to prevent incorrect camera-channel to HFM-channel assignment.

Can Different FAKRA Colors and Codings Be Customized ?

Different FAKRA colors and codings can be evaluated according to the actual mating connectors.

Different codings can help reduce the risk of mis-mating in systems containing multiple RF interfaces.

However, the complete equipment-side FAKRA part number and actual mating interface must be confirmed before customization. Selection should not be based on color alone.
