What Is an IX A Key Industrial Ethernet Interface ?

ix Industrial is Hirose's compact connector system for high speed industrial equipment transmission and complies with IEC 61076-3-124.

Compared with conventional RJ45, the objective is not simply to change connector appearance. The interface is designed to provide increased connector density, mechanical reliability and high speed Ethernet capability inside industrial equipment.

Why Does the 90° Downward Cable Exit Matter ?

 

Industrial connectors are frequently installed close to enclosure walls, PCB edges, DIN rails or adjacent modules. With a straight plug, the cable must first extend outward from the rear of the connector before changing direction through its allowable bend radius.

 

PCM-HD-0294 uses the CVL1 downward-cabling architecture, allowing the cable path to change direction directly at the connector.

This can reduce required rear clearance, reduce cable stress caused by tight bending, improve cable routing inside control cabinets and prevent the cable from obstructing adjacent interfaces.

 

The 90-degree design therefore addresses mechanical packaging; it does not change the Ethernet protocol or network speed.

Is an IX A-Key to RJ45 Cable an "Interface Converter"? Why Does It Not Need a Protocol Conversion Chip?

 

An IX A-Key to RJ45 cable can be described as a physical interface adapter cable, but it is not an active protocol converter. Although IX A-Key and RJ45 differ in connector geometry, pin count, and mechanical design, PCM-HD-0294 carries the same Ethernet differential signals through both interfaces.

 

Correct pin mapping routes the four RJ45 differential pairs to the corresponding IX A-Key contacts without changing the Ethernet protocol or PHY, so no protocol-conversion IC, PHY, or signal-processing chip is required. Actual 10Gbps performance still depends on the Cat6A cable, termination, shielding, equipment PHY, and complete channel design.

IX Type A supports Cat6A/10Gbps Ethernet, but mechanical mating does not ensure system compatibility. Verify the exact P/N, keying, pinout, RJ45 mapping, PHY and channel length. A-Key and B-Key are not interchangeable.

Are IX A-Key and RJ45 Both Ethernet Interfaces ?

Hirose defines Type A IX for Ethernet communication, while RJ45 is the established 8P8C Ethernet interface. Their mechanical structures differ, but correct pin mapping and a compliant cable assembly allow them to operate within the same Ethernet link.

Are IX A-Key and B-Key Interchangeable ?

They should not be designed as interchangeable interfaces. Hirose requires the plug and receptacle to use the same mating key, so selection must follow the actual equipment-side P/N and key type.

What Is the Difference Between IX30G and IX40G ?

In Hirose's catalog, the IX30 series primarily uses IDC termination, while the IX40 series uses hand soldering. Selection depends on wire gauge, cable construction, manufacturing process and the complete P/N.

Does a 90° Connector Reduce Network Speed ?

The 90° geometry only defines the cable-exit direction and does not actively change Ethernet protocol or PHY speed. However, the internal termination remains part of the high-speed channel, so manufacturing consistency and validation are still important.

Does a Green TPU Jacket Mean the Cable Is Drag-Chain Rated ?

No. TPU can provide good flexibility and abrasion resistance, but drag-chain suitability must be verified through conductor construction, minimum bend radius, test cycles and supplier flex-test data.

Can Other Cable Lengths Be Customized ?
